The Korean Wave, or Hallyu, is a term referring to the increase in the popularity of South Korean culture since the late 1990s. The term was originally used by mid-1999 by Beijing journalists who were surprised by China's growing appetite for South Korean cultural exports. They then referred to this new phenomenon as "Hánliú", which literally means "flow of Korea". First driven by the spread of K-dramas televised across East, South and Southeast Asia during its initial stages, the Korean Wave changed from a regional development into a global phenomenon. Global popularity came through kpop on youtube. Currently, the spread of the Korean Wave to other regions of the world is most visibly seen among teenagers and young adults in Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa, and immigrant enclaves of the Western world. The growing acceptance of South Korean pop culture. Hallyu is one of the biggest things in Korea. Many people are fans of idols and korean dramas. Fandoms arise everywhere and Hallyu is still spreading today.
